Factors affecting the water pump efficiency

I. The loss of effective volume

The loss of effective volume includes flow losses caused by circulating water flow of pump size mouth and losses caused by leakage of stuffing box and balance disc. If losses caused by the latter is within the prescribed scope, it is ordinary loss to ensure pump operation. The losses caused by circulating water flow of pump size mouth are mainly related with the size and length of seal clearance of pump size mouth and single-stage head. Under normal conditions, the length of seal clearance and single-stage head are constant. Thus, the losses caused by circulating water flow of pump size mouth are directly related with the size of seal clearance of pump size mouth. Seal clearance of mouth ring increases 0.2mm, the efficiency is reduced by about 4%.

II. Mechanical loss

Mechanical loss means the losses caused by the friction between outer surface of impeller and balance disc and water and water and pump size mouth and the looses at bearing and packing place.

III. Hydraulic loss

Hydraulic loss will directly influence the hydraulic efficiency and characteristics of water pump, which includes frictional loss, eddy loss and impact loss. Generally, the larger the flow of water pump, the less of hydraulic loss.
